Reading The Stance: What Wins A Sword Duel

Sword speed matters far less than most new players assume. Four habits below carry more weight than raw reaction time ever will.

Watch the stance, not the blade

By the time a strike is visible, it's often too late to react. Reading the stance shift that comes before it gives an extra half-second to respond.

Don't close distance first

Whoever moves in first usually gives away the initiative. Letting the opponent close the gap keeps the first strike available to you instead.

Feint before a real strike

A single fake movement can bait an early parry attempt, opening a clean window right after it fails.

Reset fully after a miss

Chasing a whiffed strike with another rushed attack usually ends the duel badly. Stepping back to reset the stance beats forcing a second attempt.

None of this needs a fighting-game background - it works the same on a first try, just with more patience than instinct suggests.
